From small beginnings over a century ago, Tullamore Golf has emerged as one of the leading park land courses in the country. It now has a membership of over 1000 and attracts a large number of visitors each year.
Although not affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland until 1896, the introduction of golf to Tullamore is credited to Colonel R A Craig who, in 1886, with a few friends, started playing golf in a field on the Geashill road. After a short period they moved to a more central location adjacent to the distillery. With interest increasing, the next move was to Tinnycross where a small club was formed and a regular course constructed.
After a number of years the club moved to Ballykilmurray racecourse where a nine hole course was laid out and a pavilion erected. The Irish Times of the 12th of May 1896 recorded that a match took place between Tullamore and Banagher clubs two days previously on the Ballykilmurray course which Banagher won by 31 holes to nil.
