The Central Towns Trophy was inaugurated by Tullamore Golf Club in 1965 for inter-club competition in the greater Midlands area and the first winners were Carlow Golf Club. It has been a hugely popular competition with over forty teams from the four provinces participating at one stage. Tullamore, the host Club, has never won the Trophy. The format is singles match-play off scratch for 13 handicap and upwards. Up until 2009 seven singles matches were played with four at one club and three at the other, depending on the draw. In 2010 the number of matches to be played was reduced to five.
